It was SO cold today that Mr. B did a little science experiment for us. Look what happened when he threw boiling hot water into the air!

Coding in Kindergarten? You betcha!!
Kindergarteners had an opportunity to explore robotics and coding with Beebots. These little robot bees are a very engaging way to teach sequencing, problem solving and coding. The students used the directional keys (forward, back, right and left) to set a program for where they wanted the Beebot to go. It was really exciting to see them work together to come up with different ways to get to a destination. Just look at these budding computer scientists learning to program!

Where is Theodore???
We were very surprised to come back from the library to find this note from our bear friend, Theodore.
We looked out the window, hoping to see his footprints in the snow.
We are hoping Theodore will come back in the spring!!

A Day At The Farm!
We had a great time visiting the Bread and Butter farm! It was a rainy day but there were so many things to do and see that we didn't mind one bit!
We visited the greenhouse where we tasted fresh kale, Swiss chard, and cilantro.
We shook up cream until it turned to butter!
We met some chickens.
We went in the special barn where the cows are milked. We saw calves and....
We even met some pigs!
Before we left, we ate some fresh bread with the butter that we made. It was a great day at the farm!

Hooray!
We were so excited when OUR honey cells filled the hive today! Time for another school wide celebration!
Technology Helps Us SHOW What We KNOW!
Mrs. Flickenger helped us to use the iPads to make this video book. We have learned a lot about bats!
CHAMBERLIN SCHOOL FOOD DRIVE
Our annual food drive has begun.
If you would like to help, please send in a non-perishable food item to contribute to our collection.
We will have an assembly on Thursday, November 17 to see how we did!

REMINDERS!
On Wednesday, November 2 there will be a half-day for students. Dismissal will be at 11:30. School's Out will run for it's regular hours, until 6:00 p.m. Students attending School's Out should bring a lunch from home.
On Thursday, November 3 we will visit the Bread and Butter farm, right here in South Burlington. We will leave Chamberlin at 9:45 and will return by 12:30. Students should dress for the weather. Boots are a good idea, but please remember a change of shoes for the afternoon. We will be eating lunch at the farm as well, so please send lunch from home, including a drink.

Bat Guy Comes to Kindergarten
Barry the Bat Guy came to visit in room 3. We learned a lot about bats. Barry volunteers for the Vermont Bat Center where he rehabilitates injured or abandoned bats. He had some amazing pictures to share with us.
Foodplay!
Today we enjoyed a presentation of Foodplay. The kids LOVED the performance and learned a lot about healthy food choices. We were most surprised to learn how much sugar there is in soda. Special thanks to Hannaford supermarkets for bringing this wonderful presentation to Chamberlin School!

Apple Science!
We have really made good use of the apples that we picked on our trip to the orchard. We learned that scientists ask questions, notice details, draw what they see, make predictions, count accurately and record their findings. Here is some of the work we've done...
Question #1: ARE SMALLER APPLES MORE GREEN THAN BIGGER APPLES?
We wondered if the smaller apples in our collection would be more green than the larger apples. We thought this might be true because, at the orchard, we learned that red apples sometimes have parts that are green. These parts did not get as much sun as the red parts of the apple. We think apples need sun to grow and so the smaller apples might be more green.
So we sorted our apples into two groups, big and small. We examined the apples to see if the smaller ones were more green.
We noticed that The smaller apples were more green than the bigger apples.
Question #2: DO ALL APPLES HAVE TH SAME NUMBER OF SEEDS? DO BIG APPLES HAVE MORE SEEDS THAN SMALL APPLES?
We wondered because bigger apples can hold more seeds. We thought that we would find more seeds in our big apples than in our small apples.
So we cut our apples open to count the seeds inside. Here are some pictures of us at work...

The cubes show how many apples were MOSTLY green.

We noticed that all apples do NOT have the same number of seeds. A small apple can have more seeds than a big apple. In fact, one of our small apples had the most seeds...14! That's the same as the number of kids in our class!
We tasted three different kinds of apples: red, yellow and green. We noticed that most of the kids in room 3 liked YELLOW apples the best.
There has been a lot of great science happening in room 3! Next up? BATS!!
